Star Power Lights Up Hamlet

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Jude Law’s Hamlet tickets are selling faster than they can print them, and with good reason. The English actor, who has been in the spotlight for his off-stage dalliances recently, has brought a new generation of theatergoers to this Shakespearean tragedy on Broadway. The multi-million dollar success story that is Hamlet owes much of its power to the presence of Law, who has starred in blockbuster movies like “Closer”, “Cold Mountain” and “The Talented Mr. Ripley”. Star quality is something that could become more common on the stage, as producers strive to bring more serious plays to the next cohort of drama enthusiasts. The recent success of A Steady Rain, starring James Bond actor Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman has seen equally good results at the box office.

New York Times and other newspaper critics have been fawning over this production of Hamlet since it opened, and recently a New York Daily News reporter described Law’s as “a spine-tingling and richly layered performance” that transcended the off-stage antics and media much-raking that accompanies them. Shakespeare is not an easy one to pull off, whoever you are. Some critics have described Law’s performance as being somewhat too animated, but in the long run the Hollywood actor’s decision to go with an easily interpreted form of delivery has paid off handsomely.
